Know before you build

Things to plan for.

The base is the job

Pavers stay flat when the soil under them is dug out, filled with base rock, compacted and graded. That's the part you never see once the job is done, and the part that decides whether the patio lasts.

Plan the drainage

A patio has to slope water away from the house. Much of the Sacramento area has clay soil that drains slowly, so drainage is planned with the patio, not fixed after the first storm.

Near oak trees

In Rancho Cordova, Carmichael, Fair Oaks and Folsom, digging inside a protected oak's root zone can need a tree permit first. Each city page below has the local rule.

Questions

Pavers & patios FAQ.

How much does a paver patio cost?

It depends on the size, the paver or stone you pick, how much digging and base the site needs, and any walls or steps. David gives you a written price after a free site visit.

Pavers or stamped concrete?

Pavers usually cost more up front, but they flex instead of cracking and can be lifted and re-laid for repairs. Stamped concrete costs less and gives a seamless look. Many yards use both: concrete for the driveway, pavers for the patio.

Will weeds grow between the pavers?

Joints filled with polymeric sand, which hardens after it is wetted, keep most weeds and ants out. Topping the joints up every few years keeps them working.

Can you add a patio cover or pergola over the pavers?

Yes. DG Landscape Design builds pergolas and patio covers too, and it is easiest when both are planned together so the posts and footings go in the right place.
